Capturing Headshots

Tips for Capturing Headshots | Crew Mama - Blog | Smile for your close up!! When photographing headshots, it’s important to make sure the talent is as happy with the final result as possible! One of Crew Mama’s preferred makeup vendors recently did the makeup for Warner Media’s company headshots! We’ve come up with a few tips to make the headshots turn out awesome!

Natural Look

While you do want the subject to have a more natural look to their makeup, it’s important to note that this does not mean applying makeup lightly. You don’t want the lighting to wash out the subject, so using a strong foundation color will help make them stand out.

Emphasize Features

The eyes are a great place to start. While still going for a more natural look, defining the eyes is a great way to make the subject really stand out on camera.

Lighting and Positioning

Since the shot is closer to the face, the subject’s skin will stand out more than usual. By using a diffused light to gently wrap around the skin, you’ll bring definition to the subjects face without highlighting their blemishes. You can also choose to place a hair light above or behind them to add depth to the shoot or pull the top of their head out of the background.

Create Separation

Make sure there is enough space between the person being photographed and the background. If they are too close together, shadows will develop and create a problem that will make the shot seem less professional.

Use the Correct Lense

There’s nothing worse than getting the perfect shot just to realize it was ruined by lens distortion. To avoid this, you should avoid using mid to wide angle lenses for close up shots. You’ll instead want to use a lens that is typically around 90mm and above, this will compress your image and slim your subjects face.Make sure to refer back to these tips next tip you’re capturing headshots for a client.Thank you to Warner Media for calling on our crews to help with your headshots!
